Viridarium/Garden

Description:

Located in the northwest corner of the small garden was a shrine. This was comprised of a masonry aedicula structure in the corner of the room with a niche beside on the northern wall. The aedicula structure consisted of two deep arched niches which sat on top of each other. Above these niches ran a band of projecting tiles, with a sort of masonry pediment on top. The whole structure appeared to have been coated in stucco. The back wall of the bottom niche was painted in a dark/black colour, while paint was no longer visible in other areas. The aedicula appeared to have been added on top of the garden wall painting, with the figure of Venus cut off by the eastern wall of the structure indicating that it was newer in age than the decoration of the garden. The niche on the northern wall was a simple arched niche with a tile projecting base. Its interior was coated in stucco.
