PP509
Room function:
Unknown
Description:
In the west wall of an upper-floor room was a rectangular niche. On the back wall of the niche was a painting of Vesta seated on a donkey holding a patera. An earlier layer of stucco could be seen underneath, showing two standing figures with the appearance of the Lares. Below the niche were two serpents meeting at an altar (although not recorded by all sources). Only fragments of decoration from within the niche survive today. The wider context of the room which held this cult space is uncertain as the upper floor is not preserved across the building. However, Giacobello argues that it would have been located in the service area of the house.
