Niche

Room function:

Peristyle/Portico

Description:

Located on the west wall of the peristyle was an arched niche with a projecting base, sitting 1.73m above the floor. The interior was coated in stucco and painted, it’s ceiling and walls decorated with red and white flowers on a white background. This was continued on the underside of the base. On the back wall was the Genius holding a patera and cornucopia sacrificing on a cylindrical altar which was aflame. The altar was furnished with offerings of fruit. Beside the Genius was a camillus depicted carrying a garland of flowers. The scene was outlined by a thick red line with another around the opening of the niche. The property is not fully excavated and so the wider context of the shrine within the property is uncertain.
