Sacrarium/Cult Room

Description:

Located on the southwest corner of the atrium was a cult room. The room had a rectangular shape with a vaulted ceiling. The walls were being painted at the time of eruption; however, the ceiling had been completed, with the upper part of the wall forming a smaller arched roof within the room which had been painted red. On the vaulted ceiling, many figures were depicted including Ganymede with maenads and fauns, and Selene and Endymion. At the base of the vaulted ceiling, a frieze with a blue background ran around the three sides of the room, with figures in stucco depicting the last scenes of the Trojan war. This included the departure of Hector from the Trojan walls, the duel between Achilles and Hector, Achilles dragging Hector's body, the request for the ransom of the body by Priam, and Priam bringing Hector’s body back. The floor of the room was mosaic and was outlined by black and white alternating tiles.
