Room function:

Viridarium/Garden

Description:

Against the south wall of the garden was an aedicula shrine. The aedicula sat on top of a rectangular masonry podium. The podium supported two columns which were coated in red stucco on which a pediment with gable roof sat. In the back wall of the aedicula was cut a semi circular niche. The vaulted ceiling of the niche had been adorned with stucco in the shape of a shell. The niche was painted orange and on the walls on each side of the niche was a stucco pilaster. Within the aedicula stood a marble statue of Venus Anadyomene. On either side of the structure were large niche like vertical cuts made into the walls, which has been suggested to have once held candelabra.
