Description:

On the west wall of the atrium was a large shrine. The lower register was comprised of four sections, each containing a plant and birds, separated by linear detailing. The second register contained four figures. This included Mercury holding his purse, and caduceus with a rooster and an omphalos with a serpent coiled around it. Next was Victory holding a palm leaf and a wreath which she was placing on Hercules' head next to her. Hercules, standing in the centre, held his club and a bow, with his lion skin thrown over his shoulder. Between Victoria and Hercules was a hog. On the right was Minerva, holding a spear and pouring a libation from a patera onto an altar. Against her leg leaned a large shield with a gorgon head on it. Farther to the right was an owl perched on a pilaster amongst plants. Above this ran a cornice of moulded stucco decorated with a red stripe. Above this was the second highest section which sat on this cornice. Two stucco pilasters support the pediment, painted white with a narrow blue stripe. The pediment was adorned with symbols in stucco relief including depictions of laurel leaves, a patera, and a mask. In the centre of this section was a vaulted niche with a projecting ledge. The inside walls were outlined in red. The panels between the sides of the niche and the pilasters of the aedicula façade contained a depiction of Venus Pompeiana with her rudder and olive branch on the left and Fortuna with her modius and cornucopia on the right. On the outer sides of this aedicula façade were the depictions of Bacchus with his thyrsus pouring wine into the mouth of a panther among grape vines on the left, and Jupiter seated on his throne with a sceptre and his thunderbolt. In the uppermost section, two eagles were depicted over the pediment, with two peacocks on garlands on either side.
