Structural type:

Aediucla, Niche

Room function:

Peristyle/Portico

Description:

Located on the east wall of the peristyle was the free-standing aedicula. The niche of the shrine was semi-circular with a vaulted ceiling, built on a low base. The opening of the niche was flanked by two columns. The structure was constructed from masonry covered in marble. The tympanum was coloured with red and mottled marble, with grey marble used in the rest of the structure. The interior of the niche was painted to imitate walls covered in blue drapes with the vaulted ceiling painted as a shell. A statue of Venus was found inside the niche during excavation.
